Types of international road transportation
International road transportation has its own classification according to the types of cargo transported. Cargoes can differ in their belonging to this or that sector of economy. Also, cargoes differ in their intended purpose – raw materials, finished products, fuel, household chemical goods, household appliances, perishable and dangerous cargoes, etc., as well as in types of rolling stock and transport characteristics, such as capacity, size, bulkiness, etc.
There are cargoes that always belong to one class. Classification of such cargoes is as follows:
International road transportation of conventional cargoes
Cargo, the mass of which does not exceed the value set by the manufacturer for the vehicle intended for use on public roads, and the overall dimensions of such cargo and vehicle comply with the rules of the road.
For delivery of different cargoes our company uses the following types of transport:
- trailer trucks and road trains with a capacity of 82 to 120 m3;
- standard curtain-sided Euro trailers with a volume of 60 to 92 m3;
- Jumbo and Mega Trailer with a volume of 96 and 116/120 m3 respectively;

International road transportation of perishable cargoes
Perishable cargoes mean the products that require special storage conditions and tight delivery times, the transportation of which must be carried out in compliance with the temperature regime, individual for each type of specific cargo. Preservation after transportation of their original consumer properties is of fundamental importance for such cargoes. Accordingly, special requirements are imposed on the vehicles that carry out this type of transportation.
Perishable cargoes are divided into several groups:
- products of vegetable origin: fruits, berries, vegetables, mushrooms, etc.;
- products of animal origin: meat of various animals and birds, fish, caviar, milk, eggs, etc.;
- products of processing: dairy products, various fats, frozen fruits, sausages and other meat products, cheeses, etc.;
- living plants: seedlings, flowers, etc.
According to the methods of observing the temperature regime, the cargoes are divided into subclasses:
- Frozen – storage temperature below – 6С;
- Refrigerated – temperature from -5 С to -1 С;
- Cooled – temperature from 0 C to + 15 C;
Road transport used for transportation of perishable cargoes, can be divided into three main classes:
Ice-cooled vehicles. Here, the minus temperature regime is provided by dry or natural ice, and also by means of a plant operating on liquefied gas.
Refrigerators. In refrigerators, unlike ice-cooled trailers, the required temperature is maintained by means of such special cooling systems as absorption devices and compressor units.
Heated road transport. In the body of such vehicle the constant temperature is maintained by means of a special heating system.
Vehicles-refrigerators have significant design features due to which their type classification has appeared. The customer can choose a ref container, a van, give preference to a trailer, a semi-trailer or a truck. Each of these types has its advantages and disadvantages.
Ref van is preferred by those freight carriers, who operate within the city borders and deliver cargoes of small volume. International road transportation of assorted cargo
Transportation of assorted cargoes is the best option in those cases when the order of goods in bulk is inexpedient, i.e. you need to deliver a small batch of goods or raw materials, which does not occupy fully the cargo trailer space. This type of cargo transportation allows saving money, as the owner of the cargo that makes a part of the assorted batch pays only for the place that his cargo occupies in the trailer of the truck.

International road transportation of dangerous goods (adr)
Many spheres of industry use such substances, misuse of which may pose a threat to human life and health. Their storage and usage requires compliance with certain safety rules. Knowledge of and compliance with transport standards play an important role.
Dangerous cargo means various substances, transportation of which can lead to emergencies (fires, explosions), which threaten damage to structures, buildings, warehouses, devices, vehicles and living beings.
There are 9 classes of dangerous cargoes:
- Explosive compounds.
- Gases – toxic, asphyxiating, corrosive, oxidizing and flammable.
- Flammable liquids and their mixtures.
- Various flammable solid materials, during transportation of which there is a risk of ignition from external sources, as well as compounds that can release flammable gases when in contact with water.
- Oxidizing compounds, as well as peroxides, which can burn or explode under certain conditions.
- Toxic, poisonous and infectious substances that are dangerous to humans.
- Radioactive substances.
- Caustic and corrosive compounds, capable of spontaneous combustion and / or representing a biological hazard to humans.
- Other dangerous compounds.
Delivery of dangerous cargoes is possible only by road transport, prepared specially for the carriage of cargoes of this type. The vehicle must be necessarily marked with indication of a hazard class of cargoes being transported. Dangerous cargoes include objects or substances, transportation of which is fraught with damage to the health of people, environment, as well as damage to property. Dangerous cargoes occupy a special place in the classification of cargoes, as their transportation is associated with risk and must be carried out in compliance with the strictest security measures. In addition, there is a number of rules and requirements related not only directly to the carriage of such cargoes, but also to the rolling stock, the equipment of trucks carrying such cargoes, and the availability of a specially trained driver-forwarder.
International road transportation of heavy and oversize cargoes
Transportation of oversize cargo is a complicated process that requires preparation and compliance with the rules. The main difficulty is associated with an increased risk of road accident, in addition, there can be bridges and tunnels with height and load-bearing restrictions along the route. Communication lines and power lines, intersections with railway crossings also present difficulties. All the issues should be taken into account when developing the route, a vehicle with an oversize cargo must necessarily have identification marks.
The cargo is considered oversize if its dimensions exceed dimensions of the vehicle, which leads to an increased risk of an accident. Such cargoes are usually marked in a special way, which allows other road users to notice them in time and take precautions in advance.
Types of oversize cargoes:
- Oversize cargo. Its dimensions exceeds dimensions of the vehicle, there is a possibility of congestion of a part of the road.
- Heavy cargo. Its weight exceeds the maximum weight permitted for transportation by this type of transport.
Examples of oversize and heavy cargo are: dwelling house, agricultural special equipment, yachts, boats, heavy generators, concrete products and other objects of unconventional shape and weight.
Often such a cargo cannot be transported by standard methods. Transportation of an oversize cargo is carried out with the use of special vehicles: trawls and low-loaders. Trawls are semi-trailers with a carrying capacity of up to 150 tons. Their length can reach 16 meters, and width – 4 meters. Low-loaders belong to cargo platforms, characterized with the absence of restrictive sideboards.
In accordance with the rules of international transportation of oversize cargoes, it is necessary to observe certain rules and regulations. This type of economic activity is regulated with universal transport conventions. In addition, a bilateral agreement on transportation and communication, a special permit are required.
For the international transportation of oversize cargoes attention should be paid to the following nuances:

International road transportation of liquid cargoes
The main way to transport liquid bulk cargo is transportation by tanks.
However, with apparent simplicity, transportation of cargoes by tanks, in fact, has a number of ins and outs. The fact is that for each of the liquid cargoes, even of the same type, separate, specially modified tanks are required. For example, crude oil and gasoline, or other products of oil refining, cannot be transported in the same tank. Not to mention milk, or, let say, live fish, since transportation of this cargo is carried out very in tanks.
Transportation of cargoes by tanks is carried out by those types which are specially designed for the movement of certain types of cargo. Main of them are as follows: for crude oil; light, and separately, dark refined products, which are supplemented with a heating system (for bitumen, asphalt); tanks for liquefied gases; liquid wastes; special tanks for chemicals and chemical products, which in turn have a number of modifications, respectively for inert and corrosive substances, depending on the physical condition of such cargoes, etc. Materials, the tanks are made of, are also diverse.
Transportation of cargoes by tanks is carried out, in overwhelming majority, by tanks with typical characteristics. Main of them are:
- capacity from 6 to 40 thousand liters;
- length from 13.7 to 16.1 m;
- mass from 12 to 24 t;
- from 1 to 5 compartments in the tank;
- working pressure up to 25 kg / cm. cube;
- tanks are equipped with a pneumatic or spring suspension, depending on the type of cargo.
